is this normal?

Postby zix » Tue Feb 01, 2005 10:58 pm

Today I roasted 200g of 8:1 Colombia/Kenya in the oven, 170g of Old Brown Sulawesi with the heatgun, 100g of Ethiopian Moka and then 90g of Old Java in the popper.
In hindsight, I can´t decide which is worst: that I did four batches with three different roast methods during one afternoon while taking care of three kids (no, I wasn´t the only parent during all that time; the heatgun roast was done with wifey at home) and making dinner? Or that I just remembered the bean kinds, the blend proportions and the weights of those four batches by heart?
Most of all, is this really normal behaviour for a coffee-head, or have I crossed the borderline? Talk about long-time effects of caffeine addiction... Do you people do things like this?

Sounds entirely normal and balanced to me. Roasting is what you do inbetween making coffee! If I couldn't roast, I'd end up drinking far too much! ;-)

It's 1h30 in the morning and I have to battle to not go and brew me a fine harrar espresso cup. This can't be normal... Or can it ?

Nightly roasting desires! I have them too, but my body usually tells me I'd only trip on something and spill the beans...

I was having troble with a cuban bean a while back, and thought it may have been my imex, so I tried a load in the oven. Set it to 230c its fan assisted so hotspots shouldn't happen. I didnt think it was too bad for a first go a bit burnt though. If i was gooing to do it again I'd try a different shape of roasting tin as they were a bit more burnt on the side nearest the fan. With practice 'd put money on it that it would give the imex a run for its money.

I got an oven roast tutorial coming up in a while, quink. steves is helping me to make it better, and when it passes his discerning eye (in a week or two, after I edited it a couple of times) it can be made official.

Yes please zix, very much. Send me the text, preferably with some pictures, and we'll put it up on the site.
