Doi Chaang Thai

Postby phil » Wed Aug 27, 2003 12:17 pm

Roasted some more last night (Wholebean Premium again), this time properly (i.e. didn't over-extend the roast by leaving the filter out!). The roast was about two and a half minutes shorter as a result. Took it to first snaps of 2nd.

Will try it in a day or so and let you know what I think this time. I presume you guys got my mail about the first batch? No-one replied.

Did you mean to leave that post empty Eward? Was it your subtle way of asking me to post progress (I'll do that tonight anyway)?

You 'complained' no-one replied. I agree it was not a hilareous joke, but still funny enough. :?

Thai Tasting (Wholebean)

Postby phil » Mon Sep 01, 2003 11:04 am

Tasted it last week, didn't get round to saying anything about it.

So far the impression is of a very light, balanced coffee (when roasted to the first snaps of 2nd). Quite drinkable, but nothing exciting - didn't get much in the way of varietal characteristics. Slight acidity, smooth but not much mouthfeel.

Inoffensive, possibly anodyne, is the description that springs to mind. I intend to try a batch in my new eSantos to see if I can detect the subtleties better when not using French Press.

I'll roast some more tonight to be ready for that. I may do some Peaberry to see if that concentrates any flavours

Tried it again today

Postby phil » Tue Sep 02, 2003 11:59 am

I just emailed this description to a guy on the SM list :

My first reaction was "so what?". Roasted just to the very edge of second crack the result was light, low in acid and didn't seem to be saying much else. I've tried a few batches (always brewed in french press) and my reaction was always "well that was pleasant but unexciting". Today I tried brewing ever so slightly cooler and voila! Interesting subtleties (and I do mean subtle!!) started to show. Very slightly floral.

I'm going to try vac-potting this stuff. I think my french press results are "muddying" the subtleties. I've got an eSantos coming in the post (today hopefully) and I'll try it in that. If push comes to shove I guess it's time I got my 25-year-old Cona out of the cupboard and dusted it off.

So, maybe not a *great* coffee but one that is more interesting than I gave it credit for being. And I've yet to try the peaberry.

Must roast some more. C'mon Parcelfarce, get that eSantos to me!!!

Roasted some more tonight

Postby phil » Thu Sep 04, 2003 10:57 pm

Definitely shy of 2nd, but 1st was complete, the bean looks smooth and as far as I can tell the smell was sweetening.

We'll see in a day or so when its rested a bit.

Tasting of latest batch

Postby phil » Sat Sep 06, 2003 4:04 pm

(Still using my new eSantos)

Well this coffee definitely likes a lighter roast. Delicate, slightly nutty, slightly sweet, still not too acid, some other things in there I'm not quite on top of yet.

Maybe not quite up there with Kona & JBM but it's growing on me.

Hmmmm

Postby phil » Sun Sep 07, 2003 11:29 am

Just had another pot and couldn't find anything in it worth noticing.

Maybe I need to stick to espresso first thing in the morning and wait for my palate to wake up as it's obviously even lazier than I am!!

Thread : "Thai arabica - experiences"

No-one seemed interested. Sent Joanna a note pointing her to my posting. I don't think she was too pleased.

Ah well!

You should try it - maybe I'm missing the subtleties.

Must try the Kona this weekend btw.
