Sunnyfield wrote:CakeBoy, the ActiveX control is both on the link AND TMC! I feel quite stupid installing it, but I thought it was genuine.

I use Norton 360 (Symantec). The AV programme is supposed to be user-friendly, so all warnings are hidden from the user. I have no idea if it was removed. I will do some testing tonight.

Can somebody post a link to a virus database with the virus description, please?

The trojan is 'downloader' I believe, details of which are here. You can access a removal tool here, and free online scans of your computer to ensure it is no longer present can be found here and here. Let me know if you get stuck.

Well done, being hacked sucks, but the quick fix is a good publicity.

A few points from the dark side:

Firstly, many thanks to Phil for prompt response to an attack.

Secondly users with Firefox may not be affected. I followed the link, slightly suspiciously but with Firefox settings in moderate paranoia mode and saw what looked like three tiny graphics. Since then nothing untoward, and Zone Alarm Pro virus scanner is happy so far.

Anyone still using Internet Explorer in fully trusting mode really needs to sort that out :-)

Finally, don't forget to leave the beans in that little bit longer...

Thanks to Phil for recomending Firefox to me years ago when I joined, been my browser of choice since then. The e-mail was easy to spot as a fake, the headers showed it as from TMC but the wording and link were obviously dodgy. On a unrelated note, it is always worth backing up your critical data on a very regular basis, just to be on the safe side. I have come across a few people recently who have suffered hard drive failures (not related to the above or even malware in general - just mechanical failure) who have lost a considerable amount of personal data they can never get back.

I used IE for TMC (fairly paranoid settings and the excellent free McAfee SiteAdvisor) as I was having problems seeing the photos posted but FireFox for most other sites, now I've switched to FireFox for TMC also and can still see the photos posted. I thought the email was fishy but refreshed a TMC Web page - SiteAdvisor blocked the redirect to the .biz site as it was a known dangerous site.
RobC : I use a couple of external USB disks for full machine backups, one is always off site and I use mirrored internal hard disks plus a UPS but then I'm in IT so I've seen too much data lost - mostly by others!

Cheers,

Hugh
