Signing in when visiting

Postby phil » Thu Oct 21, 2004 1:26 pm

It isn't exactly compulsory  but I'd deem it a real favour if members could sign in when visiting the site.

That way when I see (like now) one member (me!) and 8 guests I'll have a clearer idea whether we have loads of people visiting who haven't joined, a number of search engine bots crawling the site (doesn't happen often enough, but it is happening more and more now), or simply members who haven't signed in.

Sub-topic: do members want me to incease the life of their sign-in cookies? These are the little files TMC writes to your computer so that the web server knows you're logged in. The default life of these is about a week, but at least one member has asked me to increase this lifetime as he signs in from a number of different computers and has trouble remembering his password!

Let me know if you have any strong views on this matter one way or another.

Thanks for listening

Phil

Usually when I sign in I can see my name on the left hand side. But now I can't. Am I being a bit thick?

We had this happen recently with Raf. Something to do with the session table getting out of kilter, and absolutely no reflection on your intelligence old chap.

Try logging out explicitly and then logging back in again. That fixed it for Raf.

Please let me know the outcome too. Cheers.

Hmmm - although the session table problem is the symptom, I do wonder if Apache (the web server) isn't the culprit. I vaguely recall our version of Apache (2.0.48 ) having some cookie related issues.

Looks like I'll be upgrading Apache as well as Exim over the next few days! As a general rule, it can't hurt.

I often get logged off after a few minutes, sometimes whilst writing a post, which is annoying, as the first I know is when my post doesn't post. I always copy my text to the clipboard first now.

If you get logged off after a few minutes then I would venture to suggest that you have cookie-related issues on your machine. If you want any help with these, please drop me an email.

As a comment to all members - if you have what appear to be technical issues with the site please let me know as I can't do anything about problems unless I know they exist.

I get this both at work and at home, I just thought the site booted you after a while of innactivity, I didn't realise it was not supposed to happen

Oooh no, your session will last for seven days if you remain connected. There are some complications related to PHP session timeouts which I don't totally understand yet, but your overall TMC session will not die if your PC is correctly configured with respect to TMC's cookies.

Drop me a line mate. Or call me on the phone tonight. You have the number.

I'm using Netscape at home with session cookies enabled but cookies are deleted at the end of any session. If I am inactive for about 15 minutes or more I have to sign in again.

Don't know if this is how Netscape interprets a "session", but it's a bit irritating. I don't want to loosen controls on cookies for reasons not relevant to here, and I certainly don't want to use Internet Exploder.

If it's just down to Netscape's interpretation of what counts as a session then I'll live with it. Otherwise if you've got some info on what's causing it I'd be interested to know.
I wish I were what I was when I wished I were what I am.

The cookie's life (time to live) is supposed to be seven days. It's not just a session cookie - it's supposed to persist your login over a long period. Can't you loosen controls on a per-site basis?

If you're using Netscape, can't you just upgrade to Firefox? Works fine. Allows site-specific exceptions too.
