well, good idea about the numbers. I've seen that too, but it's probably hard to set up.
This week I am eagerly anticipating the first god shots from my La Spaziale machine....

To combat this other websites use a enter the code system to avoid thespambots. The website generates an image of 3 or 4 letters/numbers and asks you to enter them.

This could simply be done at the time of submitting the post and would avoid automated spambots. Simple solution, but would only work if the postings are not being done in "person"

What you mean with codes is know as Captcha. New spambots are able to decode some of them, it is not really secure. See this website.

Raf:
There is an option to work with Captchas in phpbb, but I don't know if you can use it in an open forum, or that it is for registration purpose.

How about something a bit simpler then.

Set up a small script linked to the open forum, so that when an UNREGISTERED member tries to post, it asks them a simple question, requiring a 1 word answer.

e.g. how many fs in coffee (answer in letters), what do you grind in a coffee grinder, whats this site called (3 letters), two plus three equals? etc.. etc..

If there is a valid answer let them post, if not, don't. Registered (logged on users wont see the question). You change the question once per week.

Thats it, simple and effective enough for this site and no need to wait for TMC2. If they are not able to answer a simple anti spam question, I probably wouldn't have wanted to read their post anyway.
