Try looking for advanced booking or saver deals - otherwise, yes it's a rip off. Cheaper to charter a private jet!

Cheers,

Hugh

Indeed, flight from amsterdam to leeds and back is around 150 eur... but if I fly I can't take my surfboard and I understands there's pretty ok surfspots at North Bay and South Bay.... ah well... no surfing then.

Any recommendations on cheap B&B in Scarborough ?

What's really funny Joris...your probably nearer than I am to Scarborough....it would certainly cost me more like 200 eur to get there and back by train (and about 5 hours either way) ...isn't britain great

Joris wrote:What is wrong with the brittish railroad ??? I mean, a ticket from london to scarborough is 81 pound according to their website, a retour ticket would be around 160 pound? I can't believe this, can anyone confirm these prices?

If I can be of any help:

First: the british rail system is completely f*** up, a total rip off, and a national disgrace. The verity of this truth is held to be universal, self-truthful and absolute.

Now, about your ticket: the simplest way is to book online either directly through GNER (at http://www.gner.co.uk/GNER ) or on the national rail website ( www.nationalrail.co.uk ). I'd personally go for the second option, can't stand these websites where you have to signup, register, give your credit card details and the age of your mother in law before you can access any information.

The cheapest option is what GNER (may they rot in hell forever) call GNER STD ADVANCE2 tickets: single tickets that cost £17 one way. They have to be booked (well) in advance and so would make a total of £34 return. I'm pretty sure they're non-transferable, ie. once you've chosen the train you travel on you can't change later (i leave you to guess whether the train company is trying to arrange things to suit their paying customers or simply themeselves....).

So it is cheaper than the full price, but makes a whole farce of trains as a flexible and convenient way of travelling. Anyway, I had a look for you on nationalrail website and they seem available for the dates you wish to travel on, though they aren't that many option left so it's probably better to book quickly if you want to. ...Hope that helps!

(have to go play a few hours of DOOM now. Just thinking about these damn train companies and all I see is red... blood...blood... BLOOD EVERYWHERE     )

The good news is that I can take some days off at work so that's one problem less... I am certainly not going to bother going by train, thanks for the info Fred but fixed times is not something which is easy when coming all the way from the Netherlands, so that leaves flying as only option (unless more ppl from the lowlands are thinking of going, then we could go by car/ferry maybe, Beany???).

Barry, i will check the PM for the B&B info... thanks. Will make my final decision tuesday or so... can't really think straight now (went to a Tiësto-party last night... been dancing nonstop from 2300hrs till 0730hrs...)

Joris.

If you/a few are coming via ferry to Hull, dont worry about transport to Scarborough. i will get someone to pick up from port. if your going to make that kind of effort it would be the least i could do. :)

Ferry (for foot passenger) from rotterdam to hull is 230 euro

Seems that flying is the cheapest option, who would've thought that :?

Barry, can you pm me the info about the B&B, I somehow didn't get that or I've deleted it by error before reading ...
