Current technical problems with TMC

Postby phil » Fri Apr 30, 2004 11:10 am

To all those non-members who have been impacted by our technical problems, my sincere apologies for the inconvenience. The membership has been kept advised by email as to the nature of these and the steps being taken to resolve them.

To everyone : I have today found additional evidence to convince our host's support people that this is their problem, not ours. I just sent this:

Dear Host Europe Support

In case you have been labouring under the mis-apprehension that this problem
was somehow an application software issue and therefore my problem, you'll
have to change your mind.

I just went into phpMyAdmin for the database in question (postnukedb) and
selected a table. This is what I got:

Database postnukedb - Table pn_blocks running on Host Europe
Error

MySQL said:

Lost connection to MySQL server during query

I think you have a MySQL problem. Please advise as to its nature and what
steps you are taking to remedy it.

Kind regards

Phil Jordan

I'm sorry it's taking so long to get our own dedicated server finished - it was almost there a month ago, but since then I've been so tied up with personal stuff that I haven't been able to finish the work. This problem is making me determined to get the server finished as soon as possible. However, my wife and I are away for most of this weekend so it'll probably be a couple of weeks yet.

Once more, I'm really sorry for the continuing problems affecting the usability of TMC and I am doing everything I reasonably can to resolve them.

Perhaps we should have a warning on the front-page so that visitors do not leave and never return! Practically it is not a big problem, but it looks really amateuristic. (I am not blaming you Phil, just in case! :-) )

Hokay, the response and hopefully the resolution:
Host Europe Support wrote:Hi,

Thank you for your email,

When putting this matter accross to our systems administration department the problems of MySQL on your server Saturn have been down to simultaneous connections the server. However this isssue is now resolved and you should see the difference now.

If you have any further questions please do no hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,

Told them so didn't I? Heck, I'm a database professional in my day job. Anyway, hopefully all should now be well.

If all is NOT well, please should immediately and loudly.

Sorry for the problems

Yeah me three...

I've told Host Europe it's not fixed. I'll let you know what happens. In the mean time, hopefully this weekend will be free to sort out the technical kinks in the new server and plan the migration (it's not just TMC - it's the email too).

Cheers

Our systems team are taking the neccessary steps to fix this problem. They have given me input that MySQL processes on the Saturn server should be functioning back to normal within the next 24 hours.

Hmmmm - well we'll all believe that when we see it, methinks.

In the mean time I can only say once more how sorry I am about the poor performance of the site at the moment and that I'm leaning on Host Europe as hard as I can. I've also asked them to tell me what was actually wrong so that I can bear that in mind when administering our dedicated server.

Chocolate coffee pots the lot of 'em.

Just sent this:
Regrettably this problem persists (and it's as bad as it always was). Please advise as to whether you had believed it solved, and what plans you have to progress the matter further.

Host Europe sent this today:
Host Europe wrote:Hi,

Thank you for your email.

Yesterday our system administrators made some changes to the method used for load handling on all the production servers, so far this has seen a significant improvement on issues such as you have reported. Please monitor your site over the next couple of days and advise us again if you dont see such an improvement.

Kind Regards,

My experience has been that the site is now painfully slow at times, but I've not had an error message for a couple of days. How about everyone else?
