Barista training wanted - done - review added

Postby Ed » Sun Sep 21, 2014 7:22 pm

I thought I might indulge my interest a bit further and get some proper training. A nice simplish day out with an expert in a conducive environment would suffice. I don't need to be pulling championship quality shots after eight hours.

I live in the North West Midlands and I am inclined to travel to Manchester for entertainment, shopping etc. And I lived in Birmingham for a while so I am comfortable there.

I have Googled Barista training and everything seems to be based in Yorkshire!! Why might that be do you suppose?

Anyway, before plumping for a trip up the M6 and M62 I wonder if any of you out there know of a suitable training provider in the region between Birmingham and Manchester?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Ed, It is good to see you around here :D I do not have any experience of barista training so can not help you. Hopefully, others will be along with advice.

The one I have heard good reports of is limini in Bradford...like you say a trip along the M62 not5oo far.

Personally I have been to shorter sessions run by Collona & Smalls in Bath. Sorry I know that's nowhere near you, but personally i thought they were great.

Thanks Chris. I too have heard good things about Limini. It was the first place I looked at.

Anybody else have any suggestions?

Have you tried contacting Dale Harris at Has Bean? I saw a few such sessions run by him advertised by HasBean some while ago. I have no idea if they still do it but might be worth asking as pretty close to your neck of the woods :)

Has Bean would be ideal but the training link on their website goes to a dead page! I suppose I could hazard an email.

Update: Thanks to my wife and the Christmas season, I am in possession of a training voucher from Limini Coffee for a half day session to be booked at my convenience some time before 15/12/15.

I would do it soon but the possibility of a snowy overnighter on the M62 leads me to think that some time in March might be good.

I might just drop my Gaggia Classic in at Caffe Shop in Halifax for service while I am up there.

Life's vagaries (new grand-children, holidays, retirement etc.) have caused me to prevaricate over booking my training but I now have it booked for September 9th. I will update you all with my experiences after the event.

I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!
