Posting movies etc

Postby phil » Thu Feb 25, 2010 2:43 pm

Folks

This happens every now and again, so I've girded the proverbials to post about it in the hope that doing so may help. Someone got caught out by this problem yesterday evening, btw.

It's like this:
  • The forum and the underlying framework software have a number of anti-hacking provisions built in
  • The one that is the subject of this post prevents the posting of HTML objects such as object tags, scripts etc.
  • This means that you can't post things like embedded movies.
  • You can however post links to other pages which contain these objects.
  • It is possible to change this via settings in the framework, but I'm reluctant to do so as someone might post an object that compromised security for members. We got hacked once (via a security loophole in the forum software, which loophole allowed SQL Injection attacks) and I still have nightmares about the backlash from all the idiots who thought that I was directly responsible for sending them nasty viruses.
Consequently I'm very reluctant to do anything which I perceive as possibly lowering the security of the site.

I hope that you understand

Understood and fully supported Phil. I doubt that any TMC member would think it sensible to trade security for a little convenience. In any case being Da Boss means that you get to make the rules and we get to be very grateful. :D :D

Agreed - and one of the great things about good webhosting is, you can have both.
However - it's a good thing Ben Franklin isn't a TMC member -

Oh.. if only he could be. He would certainly be on my shortlist of people from history who I would like to have as a member. :D

Ever read the Dr McNinja web comic?

Ben Franklin's clone is the doctor's mentor.

OK, I'll get my coat ..... :)

Actually, he is a member. Here is one of his TMC postings:

"Old boys have their playthings as well as young ones; the difference is only in the price."
Benjamin Franklin

Oh, and he also said:"I am in the prime of senility."

I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!

Thanks Bruce, those quotes look so much like typical TMC posts that I am inclined to believe you. 8) I have given a little thought to which TMC member he could be.

Since I joined TMC some years ago I have, on many occasions, been impressed with the considerable diplomatic and political skills of our moderators. One in particular could be of the right age group and appears, from his avatar, to be the right shape. If it is the person I am thinking of then age must have diminished his scientific skills somewhat, perhaps he spent too long playing with lightning. :?

The great man once compared an empire to a cake with the famous quote:

“A great empire, like a great cake, is most easily diminished at the edges.”

Well that clinches it for me.

I don't suppose outside of TMC many people could understand that he was talking about channeling and the edges of the puck being washed away. I have been expecting him to say something about the positive effects of nutation on both pucks and empires.

Electricity was one of the main things Cakes played with as a boy. He occasionally volunteered as a live crash test dummy and far exceeded expectations. His facination with small animals and fire also raised and eyebrow or two and singed a few more.

One of his favourite quotes was "Two in the socket is better than two in the plug". Once all this is taken into account, he is easily understandable!

Thanks guys, it seems that we have correctly identified our man. To remove any remaining doubt it seems that Benjamin Franklin was keen on baking cakes on his Franklin Stove. Some say he invented the urinal cake in case he got hungry whilst in the toilet. Detailshere. :D

Ugh! I wouldn't %$&* on a urinal cake.

I would send Mr Cakes a jar of my home made Seville Orange Marmalade for review, but luckily I do not know his address. I could post him a movie showing how good it was but..... Ah embedded movies! Are they a sort of soft porn? I see lots of words with more than two sylathingies and get confused.
