Advance warning

Postby phil » Sun Apr 29, 2007 6:00 pm

Please be aware that there will be essential server maintenance taking place at some point in the next 24 hours and whilst this is going on, TMC will be unavailable.

You will not receive a TMC-specific error message if you try to contact TMC during that time as unfortunately the entire Apache webserver will be down.

I expect that the outage will be no more than around 10 minutes if all of my fairly extensive preparations pay off.

No immediate change will be visible to the TMC service. This work is however a pre-requisite to the next phase of TMC 2.

I apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

Best wishes

Phil

Hi Lukas

Basically we've been running on PHP 4 since the inception of TMC. I maintained this situation for a long time after PHP 5 was visibly stable as some other sites on the server needed to be tweaked a bit to be PHP 5 compatible.

However with the TMC 2 project in full swing (or something like that anyway ) staying on PHP 4 was becoming too much of a constraint as more and more software that I wanted to deploy, both for clients and TMC, was for PHP 5 only.

So (after loads of testing and planning) I performed an upgrade of PHP 4.4.6 -> PHP 5.2.1 - along with the necessary upgrades of all of the dependencies of course. It was best to have Apache down for a brief period while this work was performed.

I have read that PHP 5.2 contains performance enhancements, and the performance of both TMC and various other sites seems to bear this out. An unexpected but useful side-effect! That means that I can hold off on either Xcache or APC for a while longer. :)

Cheers

Phil

Cool!

I always struggle with using these PHP-Caches. They work most of the time, but when they break, they break badly ... on our own server which I share with a few mates we use lighttpd as the front-end webserver and php4, php5, python and whatever as fastcgi applications. This way every user got his own php-instance and can't mess with the others, and as a plus it doesn't matter anymore if some want php4 and some php5 - we can do both. Quite nice that setup actually :) (well, we planned it long in advance and it's not really finished yet, but heck it works :))
