Coffee chat room(s)

Postby phil » Sat Jan 24, 2004 5:33 pm

Following a firm request from Eeffoc, I'm evaluating a chat package integrated into the site. I have an instance of it running on the test server. I may ask one or two of you to take a look later.

In the mean time, a question: do you think that chat should only be open to site members?

I see it more as a "live" member's clubroom.
This week I am eagerly anticipating the first god shots from my La Spaziale machine....

Oh, and just a quick f y i :

If I do put this chat room gubbins on the live site (i.e. here), be aware that you'll have to configure any pop-up blockers that you may use. My personal firewall (ZomeAlarm Pro) stopped the chat functionality working altogether until I realised what was going on and configured it to allow pop-ups on the test site.

Personally I dont see a problem opening it up and also using it as a live chatroom.
What I mean is that since you will be able to see whose online and chatting it might be nice to interact with visitors in *some* way.

Since they cannot post, they might be interested in talking live to someone about joining.
So I say turn on guest mode for now, of course if it does not work, you can always turn it off later right?

OK, chat room's in place. Left menu, "TMC Chat" is how to get to it (for now).

MrFollies, good challenge, I'd wondered that too notwithstanding that I voted for closed.

We can have more than one chat room. How about one closed and one open room? In the closed one we can say what we like to each other, and in the open one we can chat to visitors.

Does this work for everyone?

BTW I don't know what people think to the idea of chat events? I haven't done much configuration on this package so far, so the ticker is busy mentioning them as that is an out-of-the-box feature. Maybe the opportunity or need for such an event will arise sometime. Let me know if you can think of a good reason for one.

I think we have to offer added value from being a member, and things like chat and members only areas do that. Also the legal implications of offering an open chat room. I know micros**t closed there uk rooms due to possible litigation. I know this is completley different but still better safe than sorry.

The events is a good idea. How about I send a small sample of some of the new beans coming soon to everyone, and we meet online and do a cupping review at the same time? We would need to sort out the logistics and thing but I'm sure I could do the beans if everyone payed the postage? just a thought and as I've said in the past there rare so ~i traet them with respect :)

I voted for open but, I can see advantages of both so I'd say we're looking at two chat rooms. What amount of network traffic do the chat rooms generate?

Cupping event sounds like a great idea!
