Members only area

Postby phil » Fri Jan 09, 2004 9:10 pm

Following the discussion about a members only area of the forum, I've come out strongly in favour of this idea.

I propose to take the current "Off Topic" forum and move it to a new members-only section. It will then become accessible only to genuine TMC members. Everything else will stay readable by the outside world.

Questions
  1. Do you want a finer granularity than this in the members-only area? In other words, is one forum in this area enough? If not, what else do you want?
  2. Do you want the "Off Topic" forum to be renamed?
  3. Or would you rather leave the existing "Off Topic" forum out in the public eye and have a totally new one (or several)?

(or I suppose any other option you guys can think of!)

My vote would be a new area (as the Off topic does get used) and make it mysterious
(grab those new members imaginations)

I agree with Eeffoc!
As the following 'Joke' is suitable for Off topic... while my fascinating for auctions (and 'mystery'-machines) is probably better suited in a members-only section.

Phil - 'granularity' made me smile, as an architect I might suggest a couple of 'rooms' : a lounge (general/offtopic chat), a shop window (ebay news, items offered to other members, special offers  Effoc, thanks for the bonus Malabar bag !) and perhaps a boardroom for things like membership, group policy etc ?

Chris - you don't get to be an I.T. architect without having a large dose of the pompous!

Everyone - I like what I'm hearing, thanks for the contributions. I look forward to synthesising this into some new forums shortly. Anyone not had their say yet, you'd better get on with it if you want something extra!

I'm in favour of keeping as much content public as possible.

From a software point of view, are you able to set up a members' clubroom now and add rooms later or is it easier just to set the whole thing up now?

I can do it now and change it later, or just do it all later. It's all pretty much the same and very easy to administer. I'd rather not have to move too many posts around though - not that it's hard (it's not) but it is easy to "accidentally" lose posts this way!

OK following Ian's hint I'll start a new members' clubroom now and we can change it as we go along.

I strongly support Ian's view though - let's try and keep as much content as possible public facing.

OK your new "Members' Clubroom" is in place.

Somebody want to check it out to make sure you can post etc? I've locked it down so that only registered users can go there. Non-members can't even read the posts.

Cheers

Phil

OK, I just logged off and confirmed that the new "Members' Clubroom" is invisible to non-members. It isn't even listed in the forum list. Hmmmm....maybe that's not ideal. I'll look at that. What do you guys think?

Anyway, can someone post there please to confirm that it works for you? It'll work for me anyway, I've got admin privileges. I coule create a temporary test user account to test with, but I'm lazy.

Over to you guys.
