The youth of today....
THE Godfather of modern bass playing.....
Jaco Pastorius in Teen Town (sadly, due to the age, most of the vids on Youtube are pretty rubbish)

Marcus Miller is ok, when he's not trying to be popular (something more like Panther).
Michael Manring has gone a bit out there now.
Patitucci hasn't done much for a while and sometimes lacks a bit of soul I find.
Richard Bona has done some good stuff, especially fretless
I suppose the best that I know of at the moment, is probably that strange little Wooten (he only takes 1.40m to get to the theme )

Of course, I feel like I should mention Charlie Haden, Mingus, McBride, Holland, Peacock, Vitous, or even Edgar Meyer, but then that would be going slightly off topic and we don't like to do that around here.
Now, where did I lay my porkpie?
This week I are feeling sleepy!

The youth of today, indeed. James Jamerson of Motown, the king of the soul bass line.

I am still, after all these years, trying to play his fade-out to 'My Guy'....

-Ian, now semi-retired on bass.
