What car to persue as a 1st car

Postby Aadje » Tue Jul 14, 2009 2:11 pm

Hi all,

currently busy getting my drivers license, and hopefully in a month or two I'll have my drivers license (already busy a month or two - I'm no natural, but I'm getting there:)). But when I'll finally get my license I want to buy a car. But I don't know all that much about cars. I know I want one that'll run for some years without too much expenses and that'll run economically. It will also be our (also my gf's) first car, so a scratch or 2 shouldn't matter all that much.

So what car to pursue?

Unfortunately, if the Netherlands is anything like the UK, the cost of insuring the car will very much play a part in what you are able to purchase as a first car. Something small and reliable suited me millions of years ago when I passed my test. Maybe look at whatever one litre hatchbacks are about on the market? You won't go far wrong with something like that as a first car. Easily resellable and easy to park. Good luck with your test, I hope it goes well :D

Hey, I just thought .... can't you add wheels to the Speedster and drive that around? Lovely and shiny! :P

Classic Mini was my first i <3 that little motor. Easier to attain; Vauxhall (Opel) Corsa 93-04, Ford Fiesta96-02, Suzuki Swift 2000-2004 would all be cheap to insure in the UK. Same as Cakeboy though I'm not familiar with the NL way of doing things

If you want the car to last forever get a Toyota .... renown for engines lasting longer than swine flu reports

Hello Aadje,

I can only speak from my own experiences here in the UK - I am a 'young' driver (23) and have a Peugeot 306 1.4 1999 model. It costs me about 350 GBP to insure and I get about 48 MPG on the motorway. We have had 4 of these cars all together. These cars have been incredibly cost effective, very cheap servicing costs (a whole lot of parts run parallel with Citroen as well as other models like the Peugeot 106 etc) and very very easy to service (and even cheaper) if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

If you are interested and can get your hands on one of these try to go for a >1997 model as the engines all changed to multipoint injection offering a smidge more efficiency:performance. The driver and passenger airbags are another good reason to go for this age range, I believe that only the top end models had passenger airbags before this time.

Build quality is (in my opinion) very good when compared to a Mark 3 VW Golf which feels very 'thin' when you use anything. Although to be fair, VW stopped making them in 1998 so I'm not sure how fair that test is :D

Good luck with your driving license and choosing a car!!

Based on personal experience I generally recommend Toyota cars for longevity and reliability.
Three Francesconi (CMA) espresso machines - Rossi, San Marco, LaCimbali, Faema and 2 Mazzer Major grinders- CoffeeTech Maggionlino, Hottop, Alpenröst and HW Precision roasters.
I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!

Renaults are often a group or two lower than other comparable cars (in terms of size and grunt). I think this is to do with safety features. For example I have a 88hp diesel ford focus, which is group 5 but the equivalent renault megane has 86hp and is only group 3. That would make a fairly substantial difference to your premium for a first car.

Reading to title of this topic I can only offer this advice:

1. Persuing cars is pointless unless you are a dog.

2. You need to buy one not win it in a street race.

3. Stick to a bike, you meet more girls that way.

4. If you are not that way, give up.

5. A phaeton costs a fortune and all you have is a volkswagon.

6. I think it is time for my medication.
