Anybody else into electronic music production?

Postby Gadders » Sun Apr 19, 2009 1:33 am

Im currently playing around in Reason 4 trying to learn all the ins and outs of LFO's, high pass filters, automation etc etc etc. Just wondered if anybody else on here was into it too?

Phil.

Back in the old days I started out with software like MODtracker and the likes, later used Fruity Loops for a while. Played in a percussion band for a couple of years during which time I did nothing with electronic music. The band fell apart and I got my hands on Reason v2... which I liked a lot. Since its release until last year I used Reason 3 quite a lot. Had a nice setup with a Roland master keyboard and a Yamaha DD55 electronic percussion set. Used to make dub and breakbeat. I still have Reason installed but hardly ever used it anymore so decided to start learning how to play an electric bass. I traded my midi equipment for a nice Fender bass (downscaled P-bass body with J-bass neck, active precision and jazz elements).

Oh dear... another one of these threads, where all I do is prove I far too many toys and hobbies.

I'm a bit more "old school" I suppose, in that I'm more into live performance than production. Been fiddling with computers and music for a few years though starting with a commodore 64 (were you even born back then Phil?) followed by an Atari 1080 and Cubase. Nowadays it's all reason and native instruments. I do tend to favour hardware over software though (better and easier for a windcontroller IME), so I've got a rack of various synth modules (controlled by sounddiver though). What I don't have, is enough time to play with it all!

Hey, if someone wants to start a thread on knitting, or worse still, tea drinking... I do neither of those (I'm proud to say)!

Some of us, I have to confess, are still knocking out good old live rock'n'roll with real instruments... or, at the moment, good old soul music.

Everybody say Yeeeeeeaaaaaah !

Maybe some of us just need knocking out?
Seriously though, my forays into electronic stuff have never stopped me from doing acoustic stuff, as I tend to keep the 2 separate. Weirder still, I've always found it easier to play certain genres on certain instruments. I won't bite on the "real" instruments dig :P

I had a C64 - don't you have to peek and poke the hell out of it for it to do anything? A complex programming tool for sure. I stick to electric guitar as far as music is concerned, although I use a computer-based modeller for amplification, effects etc. I am very bad, but with my headphones on and the door closed noone knows!

Admittedly, more time was probably spent trying to adjust tape heads to get things to load properly
The old Roland GR's are cool for guitar
