citric acid in the UK

Postby dsc » Thu Jun 19, 2008 12:27 pm

Hi everyone,

as most of you are probably in the UK longer than me I thought I would ask this question:

Where does one buy citric acid in the UK?

I'm looking to buy some crystals to descale my soon to be Elektra and was wondering where I can get it. I've tried Boots two times but they had none, checked on ebay and there are some ads for it, but I would love to buy some locally withouth paying for shipping. Anywhere in London will do as I'm planning to go there on Saturday (btw anyone for a small cafe marathon?)

Cheers,
dsc.

Try an international foodstore or smaller pharmacy, my girlfriend needed some to make elderflower cordial recently and our local chemist had some.

I think Boots and major supermarkets shy away from stocking it as it can be used to cut other 'substances'.

A lot of Chinese supermarkets sell it.

Beware of funny looks, and unwanted attention - Citric acid is commonly used to aid dissolving heroin before intravenous use, and I would hazard a bet there is more sold in the UK to heroin addicts than coffee addicts!

One of those useless pieces of information.....

Hi guys,

thanks a lot for your help, I will try ebay as it's the cheapest. On the other hand I can also use three lemons and not bother with crystals at all...

Cheers,
dsc.

*ahem*

As someone's already posted...

I was an addictions counsellor in a previous life...

You can pick up free citric at many (most? All?) needle exchanges! :)

Though whether or not you want to be heading down that route is quite another matter :D
