Karlsbader is a little porcelaine pot with a porcelaine filter, a water distributor-part and a lid.

Coffee has to be ground coarser then usual, and even the way of pouring the (not cooking) water into it makes a difference - like all at once or bit by bit.

In any case the coffee drank with the Karlsbader methode is milder, with less pungency and "digestible" (I'm just translating ;-))

Some people in Vienna still drink the coffee that way over here.
It's also a nice show, because behind the counter I put the coffee in the filter, pour water onto it, close the lid and then walk the tray to the customer. In front of the customner I take the filter off, put the lid now on the pot, which stays at the table, and leave with the filter.
The customer now can poor the coffee into his cup, or maybe I'll do that for him, too..... That way he can detect that the coffee is fresh and it's like an extra service ;-)

Sorry, I think I attached the pics in the wrong order - but you'll figure it out :)

Cheers
