Kung Hey Fat Choy

Postby Bertie_Doe » Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:19 am

Happy 4006 to all our Chinese members and lurkers. The year of The Rat. We had a feast this evening of fried beef, fish and prawns, with plenty left to re-heat for lunch, in the traditional manner. Chinese wine is a bit grim, so we opened some rose' made with the champagne method - very nice.

Tomorrow it's BBQ-ed pork, skallops and goodness knows what else!! followed by my fav - Chinese New Year Cake. It's more of a pudding than a cake. Glutinous rice flour, sugar, eggs, vanilla and milk. Steamed and then allowed to cool - imagine a firm milk jelly. It's then cut into 5mm thick slices and fried in oil, with a bit of beaten egg. I real killer, but it's only once a year. HNY.

Ha!! I'd post you some, but the cakes been eaten - it took us 3 days. A few years ago, we stayed with the in-laws in HK for about a week, over the New Year period. We ate out a lot, but the only dessert that featured on the menu, was ice cream.

I guess they are a lot healthier, for not having a sweet tooth. One day we went to visit the giant bronze Buddha. In the adjoining monastery, I had the best veggie meal ever!! Tea is compulsory - you'll be delighted to know. :)

Kung Hei Fat Choi / Gong Xi Fa Cai (Hong Bao Na Lai)!

I overate as usual, actually got overfed. Sounds very nice, Cumberpach, but the rice cake really is not for me. Sounds much nicer than it tastes, in my not so humble opinion. :p

It tastes much nicer than it sounds. It's made from glutinous rice flour etc, not grains of rice.

Wife : "You're not going to show anyone that picture, are you?"
Me : "Of course not, why do you ask?"
Wife : "You should have cooked it longer, it's supposed to be golden brown and you forgot to fry it with beaten egg".
Me : "Well, that's just how I like it." pah!!

Again?
What happened to 2008? Are the years getting shorter as I get older? Are the rest of you even getting older or is it just me? I realised that Bruce and George have always been old, but other than them?!
Happy New Year to all!

My wife cooked the savoury stuff this year and I cooked the Chinese New Year Cake again. I think I scored 7 out of 10, which was a big improvement. I got extra points for frying a little longer, so it doesn't look too enemic and fish-like.

I may have been docked a point for not dipping the slices in the beaten egg. I prefer to pour the egg between the slices, whilst it's frying. I'd lost another point earlier, when I tried to turn the fish (Dover Sole) over, to eat the flesh on the other side!!! It seems that this is bad luck and inauspicious. I got my revenge when I spotted her using a spoon and fork on the cake instead of chopsticks. "Becoming civilised", I quipped.

This year it looks like a cheese toasted sandwich rather than raw fish Bertie. You are defintely improving, next year you should get a 10, especially with a good woman to teach you!!! 8)
