Lets talk about . . . Whisky

Postby Aadje » Sat Jul 29, 2006 11:48 am

So anyone at TMC into whisky? I for sure am.

Just returned from Islay, where I drunk some nice, nice drams. The peaty ones are defenitly my favorites. Even got to taste the Ardbeg Lord of the Isles at 150 pounds per bottle . . .

Ohhh yes as a paid up member of the malt whisky society, I love them. Never did until Phil took me there and fell in love. So many similarities. I also know that Tirisi is a member as we went there when I was in London one time. I also know that Raf loves his malts too.

I'm no so much a fan of the peaty types and love a more traditional sweeter one.

I currently have a 34 year old and a 9 year old both shrinking down a bit now :(

Both Phil and me took one of the best UK importers there after a cupping and we all sat there commenting on how coffee and Whisky are closely aligned. Good stuff.

Ha! Malt!

One of the best malts I ever drank (except for the single cask one Phil bought me, which is still up there as the essential malt experience) is the Arran Malt. Apparently it's a distillery that started in 1995 or something, after a few decades of inactivity in Arran. On a recent trip to Lyon, I saw an Arran that had aged in a Grand Cru champagne barrel (319 or so bottles produced), which I've been dying to try.

Whisky. Coffeee. Ummm ......

.... but never mix the good ones together ....

I have whisky faires that keep drinking my Aberlour Abunadh and Glenfiddich 18yo. They never seem to touch the Bells though ;)

Like Steve, I prefer the floral and sweet whiskeys. Any recommendations?

Amazingly, it cost only 73 €, and even more amazingly: I din't buy it! I was on holidays, and we had a two week trip through hot climates planned - not the best place to take your expensive malt...

I find myself longingly gazing at the picture sometimes, though

Just in case Steve's mangled syntax confuses you, Steve fell in love with malt whisky when I took him to the malt whisky society.

No rumours here. Nossir!

One more malt lover here! Scotch and especially Islay malts are my favourites. I also enjoy rye whiskey, mostly because it works so well when doing cocktails, my third liquid hobby.

One day I will come up with a cocktail that uses quality espresso and quality Scotch without doing injustice to either and still adding some value. And preferably it should use some Finnish berries also. Quite a challenge...

I once had a bottle of 18 yr old Smiths Glenlivet, tasted like petrol until you added good Scottish water and heaven was born.

Many times I have begged to be buried in a vat of pure malt but for some obscure reason I am supposed to be dead first. Where's the fun in that?

My favorate whisky so far is a 12 year old Laphroaig. It is soooo tasty. Really love it. Lagavulin is second, so I'm really into the Islay whiskys.

Back on topic, I cannot cope with cheap dry/sour whisky and spent most of my life saying that I did not like it until my Canadian cousin fed me a couple of stunning examples some time ago. I still have little idea what is what, but I do know there are some that I love though I have forgotten what he gave to me.
