Coffee people

Postby phil » Thu Mar 04, 2004 2:12 pm

So far I've been lucky enough to meet a reasonable number of the people in this group. I've known Sunnyfield and Neku the longest and I've spent time with both. I've spent quite a bit of time with Eeffoc and of course I also met everyone who came to our UK cupping event.

Yesterday I also met PeterJ for the first time.

Top people, every last one of them. Really nice human beings. And all the rest of you too, I have absolutely no doubt.

So for me it is becoming axiomatic that coffee people are good people.

Why is that do you think? Is it just (as Eeffoc said to me yesterday) because we all share an obsession?

<sends his answer on one of his special rubber cheuqe>

As I said to you phil, I think you can easily be nice and friendly to someone as good as your self.

On the whole, through my life I find most people are good. You havent come accros some of my suppliers who are in the Coffee trade who arent nice, but those ones dont share my passion for coffee, hence what I said to you yesterday.

Sorry for the downer this will surely put on this post....

I find that too, people can mostly be good people - when you know them socially.
When you get to know them because of some professional arrangement, it seems people are not always so nice.

Take my builder for example. Not picking on builders in particular but it's one recent example which still leaves a taste so bitter that dodgy espresso cant wash it.

He's a nice guy, friendly as anyone. Has a passion for some native Aussie wildlife, and we really relate. Until something goes wrong.
Then he wants to get into a discussion about who's fault it is and where his areas of responsibilities are. That's fine, until I stand firm on my own principles.
That's when he gets nasty and the nice guy dissapears.

My point is (and I have a depressed view at the moment, insert salt reference here) that people who can relate to each other on a personal level have large possibilities to really get along and enjoy each others company. It's a shame though that sometimes the professional boundry can shatter this connection. I would think people in horeca who enjoy their job (barista and cafe owners especially) would be the exception here.

Dan. (Who had to call an emergency plumber today to fix a problem that his builder tried 3 times to fix)

Oh , bit of a minefield, that topic.
Because I found out, over the years, that in most groups of people - no matter what they have in common: gender, race, religion, nationality etc - there is always the same percentage of a...holes present.
But then I am a bit of a pessimist anyway and also on the bottom of a deep hole since last night, sorry.
But the statement above makes for a good argument against racism and nationalism, at least!

But here in particular we have common ground of our passion. I have yet to find an A**hole here, but alot of that is down to the membership thing.

When the doors are locked the A**holes cant get in :)

Yeah, but you also caught me on a bad day :)

I think I see the light, this time I have the sense to *wait* to see if it's a train :)

In trading we have the saying: "Find the fool in the market, and if you can't find the fool, you are the one".

I hope there is no analogy here with unpleasant people! ;)

Hmmm, on the one hand we have a posting requesting an open forum, on the other hand we have a posting the replies to which conclude that there are lots of a...holes out there.

A guy could get confused

Repeat after me "del-squared phi equals zero when ....."

Oh hell I don't even understand that crap anymore. Time to retire. I wish! Then I could fly hawks, roast coffee and go to interesting places and meet more nice people. Or not.
