Haagsche Hopjes

Postby zapty » Wed Mar 08, 2006 3:17 pm

Anybody besides my Dutch compatriots ever try our famous
Rademaker Haagsche Hopjes coffee candy? Original recipe since 1792.
My wife loves them and occasionaly I have one.
They are actually made with coffee although I would like them a lot stronger tasting myself.

It is said they were invented here in Den Haag when a guy had a coffee with sugar in the evening and then left the empty cup. Next morning he saw that there was a brown layer at the bottom and scraped it out and tasted it...

They're quite easy to make (although they taste a bit different when homemade) It basically just like making english fudge but with less butter and with very strong coffee :) Boil it up a little longer than you would do fudge and don't whip it as much.
Veni, Vidi, Imbibi Coffea !

There you go, a Dutchmen will not even leave a scraping in a cup, how thrifty and no doubt a Hagenees, let me think, do I know any people out there...
