Coffee and the droubt in East Africa

Postby Terje » Mon Feb 20, 2006 5:50 pm

Are we doing a good or a bad thing by buying coffee from this region? I would hope and think that we're doing a good thing but I wouldn't really know.

If we're doing a good thing... can you like me see the easiest way of giving finacial aid ever?
Different beans and a frying pan, Zassenhaus grinder and a couple of moka pots...

Good question well made. Obviously Steve L is the man to ask as he is on the cutting edge of these things. A quick google found http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsro ... g_id=17172

Sorry, I gave up on the short links as they take too long to work out.

As it says some regions are suffering badly from the drought, but "Kenya (center right) had a bumper harvest in 2005, but little of the crop made its way to the drought-hit pastoral districts of the country. " - most likely this is due to export and little of the profit made would trickle back to the suffering regions. I am rubbish on both politics and this sort of issue, so Steve L of HB - where are you - we need you now!

Anything that supports a region by bying there products should help.

I'm off to talk to one of my main importers tomorrow and i'll report back anything I find out.

Cutting edge I'm not so sure but I'll shar what I can find out.

Which regions are offering the new "bying" products then?

THREAD HIJACK!!

Steve, how are these Gene Cafe's going down? The last I heard compared to the Alp both the production and performance was light years ahead and it was proving to be a home roasting dream... Any lucky owners want to report on performance?

It was awful. The "C" and "M" characters had to be thumped to make them work. Sore fingers
