Just to say that I'm now the proud owner of the Mazzer Super Jolly and to thank Phil, Ian and anyone else whose actions and words may have helped me to acquire it. I haven't actually seen it in the flesh yet and it does look rather tired in the pic so I may have saved someone else from the fate of owning a very large paperweight but I shall report back when i've picked it up and checked it over. I'm excited !

Chris.

Nice one. At that price I reckon it was an absolute steal, I thought it would go for more. Maybe when you pick it up, ask to see it in action before handing over any cash? (Take some old beans with you).

Cheers

It looks just like a sturdy, little dirty perhaps, rock-solid grinder to me...
Congrats Chris.

Phil, why is advertising a product on auction a bad thing?
Personally I am on the lookout for a 1 or 2 group commercial machine which needs love (repair).

I'd be really chuffed if someone saw it on an auction and mentioned it...
I dont have time to check for such things all the time...

The feeling is that people may not have noticed I guess. If you're not actually checking eBay regularly for something and someone else says "Hey, look at the great thing I just found on eBay" you might want to go bid for it, lessening the chance that other people who were really on the lookout and have already bid might get lucky.

Or something like that. Ian might be able to explain it more cogently.

I guess that, now we have a "Members' Clubroom" we have two choices. Either members can tell other members about interesting auctions in that private forum and perhaps agree bidding priorities, or else we agree to keep stum about interesting stuff (self interest might make us do this anyway).

As a general rule I kind of like the first idea. What do people think?

Oh and Danny you can save your favourite searches in eBay and ask it to email you if anything interesting comes up. That's how I knew about the Super Jolly that Chris won (phew!).

If it's not too invasive to ask: how much did the super jolly set Chris back? I'm looking at Mini, but if a great auction comes along, I might be inclined to take a look at it.
This week I am eagerly anticipating the first god shots from my La Spaziale machine....

I think it was in the region of eighty quid, but you'll have to check with Chris.

That said it did look a bit battered.

On the subject of ebay etc. If one of us is looking for an specific article, why not announce it here, so others can scan their country`s offers?
I would do it.

Fair enough, I have no problem with that.

I've said this before - I think that one of the things that distinguishes TMC is that we're a fairly close community of friends and we can help each other when the need arises. I like that! (and I worry about losing that characteristic as we grow bigger).

Yes, we could open a thread in our members only where people specify what they are looking for.
For example, Mr.Follies search for a two-group machine. There are always some of this kind in www.ebay.de, if I knew more about his range of price I could inform him early on.

Not sure about that!

Personally I don't think that there is necessarily anything wrong with discussing specific auctions as I regard them as publicly available information. However, some people do object and the reason they give is that it takes time and effort to research auctions and to announce a live auction is seen as giving away free information (especially to lurkers) or as a spoiler. More opinions can be found here: http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/general/21989 or http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&l ... 26rnum%3D1

So it's really an etiquette thing, a bit like burping in public, some people will think it's acceptable, some won't.

I have lots of spelling variations of espresso and cappuccino in my favourite searches and would be happy to tell another member of an auction if I knew that they were looking for something.
I guess this would be carried out in the Members' clubroom - it's up to the membership to decide?

Cheers

Um, yes, well that's a good bucketful of mud in the waters! :D

There are arguments for both sides and my head hurts - besides I need to head over to the new server and do an Apache install/upgrade, so I need all of the few ageing synapses I have left. Let's just agree that if we want to mention eBay auctions at all we do so in the clubroom and leave the rest to the individual.

OK?

I agree with Phil: let's keep rules and regulations to a minimum, and leave things up to the individual.
