Funny this thread should happen today... just arrived back home from the British Museum and there was a bloke standing outside with a rather large hawk on his hand/arm.... didn't look like he was doing any kind of display or anything so it must have been Ken after them there pigeons again! Unfortunately I didn't get to see it in action, but it was easy to see who would win! Wasn't even hooded and the traffic didn't seem to bother it at all.

Normally you don't hood hawks - hoods are mainly used with falcons.
What kind of hawk was it Dom? I guess it would have had to be a Harris - a Goshawk would probably freak under those circumstances. Assuming that it *was* a hawk, of course.
My avatar is a (picture of a) female Harris Hawk. You can get an idea of scale by realising that that's an adult hand it's standing on! Also the colouration is quite distinctive.
BTW a Harris would put the wind up a pigeon fersure, but the pigeon would get away easily.

To be honest Phil, I was in a bit of a rush, so didn't get a chance to study it closely. The colorations seemed very similar to your avatar actually (though I'm no expert in this!) definitely that reddish brown colour plumage with a markedly yellow beak. The chap was wearing scruffy clothes (the bird was much better looking, but then I always say that ), so I just guessed he was there to do a job as I had previously heard about them using birds of prey to get rid of pigeons in football stadiums. I didn't know that you hood falcons and not hawks, so you live and learn! I'm mainly used to seeing great big buzzards in France or marsh harriers in norfolk most of the time and they are far from easy to approach.
