root beer

Postby DrZeus » Fri Nov 14, 2003 1:54 pm

This is really going to display my ignorance...

Have you guys ever heard of Root Beer? It's a carbonated soda beverage, like a cola drink but better *grin* I think it might also be known as Ginger Beer or Sasparilla (although Ginger Ale is something completely different). Some of the popular brands in the U.S. are A&W, Dad's, and Barques.

The reason I ask is because my son (7 as of last week) really loves it, but it's not to be found in Portugal. If any of you have heard of it, that at least gives me hope that I might be able to find it available elsewhere in Europe and order it in time for Christmas.

Thanks!

Go to Root Beer World.

Apparently the darned stuff is made in the UK & Germany as well, and the UK company Cadbury Schweppes has international distribution rights for four of the most well known US brands. Have a dig - maybe you can find something nearer your end of Europe?

You can buy root beer in some bigger supermarkets in London, typically in cans and not in bottles. I have seen it in some small exotic / delicatessen shops as well. Not quite sure what it is doing in a delicatessen shop... the stuff is too horrible to touch. Having said that, it is quite nice with vanilla ice-cream (really!!).

It is certainly not common in Europe. Not much of a help I am afraid.
