Suggested feature - news feed

Postby phil » Thu Nov 06, 2003 12:18 am

How do we feel about taking a news feed or feeds from other sites (on the subject of coffee of course!)?

Example : Badgett's Coffee eJournal

For - well it's our area of general interest, so what's to dislike?

Against - the only worthwhile site I can find (on a quick search) providing an RSS feed on our subject area is the above one. It's a US site. Are we going to be totally purist in our European-ness?

Anybody got any views on the subject? It's not hard to do, so don't fuss about the work. Also, any of the Internet specialists around (Hugh, John?) got any other suggestions for a feed?

I think that would be a great idea.
This week I am eagerly anticipating the first god shots from my La Spaziale machine....

La Spaziale S1, Vibiemme Domobar (retd), Mazzer Mini Electronic, Behmor 1600 230V

I like the idea, too, and while the membership might be made up of Europeans, I don't think we should limit coffee information to only Europe. As for other RSS feeds, I'm afraid I haven't a clue.

Okay. I've been looking on Syndic8.com for feeds. Most are just blogs. Shame someone like the SCAA (or the SCAE for that matter), maybe the ICO, one of the magazines or someone like that doesn't provide something.

I'll put something up as a trial shortly.

On this subject, I've just emailed Bellisimo asking if they have any plans to provide a feed of their news and articles from Virtualcoffee.com. It's just the sort of thing I'd love to carry.

What about a news site like news.google.com ? Perhaps they have a keyword-based feed?

Yeah, I'd wondered about that. Also the Beeb - although I haven't had any luck there yet. I was also wondering about filtering feeds based on keywords matched against titles.

This isn't an RSS feed, but I did find an interesting list of news articles relating sustainable coffee at http://www.beantrends.com/news.html

Yup, I'd seen that too - lots of interesting stuff out there, we just need a service to do the crawling and syndicate a feed of titles and links (like moreover.com maybe)

I'm still digging ....

And, of course, you've seen Kenneth Davids' "Coffee Review" site at http://www.coffeereview.com/

The guy is a guru, in my opinion. His books are fantastic.

Of course. Although apparently he was a bit off with "Tom" recently...

If I can't syndicate stuff from sites such as that I'll at least make sure I include them in our "Web Links" section.

He met him at some "do" recently (ish). I remember Tom mentioning this, probably on the list. I'll see if I can find the reference later.

BTW I'm trialling a module "My Headlines" (during my lunch break of course ) so if the left menu blocks appear a little unstable will everyone please accept my apologies - normal service will be resumed as soon as etc etc
