Balls to wallpapering the living room, I'm off to find some sunshine. Decided on Portugal, leaving on Wednesday. Will be around the marina and old town mostly so if anyone knows anywhere good, let me know. More likely, are there any unusual Portugese coffee customs or drink recipes I should look out for?

i've always found portugal to be a bit like italy - big coffee drinking traditions, no good coffee.

there's only one thing you need to know for about portugal anyway. pastrie-mother-fucking-de-nata

Yes but will it be as good without coffee from the sweet machine?
I'm off to India for 2 weeks, not holding out much hope for drinkable coffee! :cry:

I thought you might like some feedback after the helpful tips. Might be useful to anyone searching in future.

So, Pasties de Nata are as good as anyone could ever wish a pastry to be. As far as coffee goes, they know how to make espresso insofar as it's always a proper 30ml in a demitasse and there is a decent crema. Milk drinks are not advised. You've got Buondi which tastes like a robusta free blend which is certainly drinkable but seems invariably flat and lacking in body. This is infinitely preferable to the other half of cafes in the town who sell Delta which is a blend of 50% Goodyear, 25% Uniroyal and 25% Pirelli. Locals use the full (large) sachet of sugar with each cup.
