Hello there

I'm doing some research into coffee drinking habits and wonder if anyone could point me to an online or offline resource that describes coffee drinking rituals across Europe (eg time of day, how it's served, the social context).

Or are there some posts buries in these forums?

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Omaid

There's a section in the Espresso Science book that's edited by Andrea Illy. It's quite short though.
I doubt it's online. I could reproduce it here, but I suspect there would be copyright issues. If one of the admins says it's ok I'll do it.

Hi omaid,

I can't think of any specific resources, but TMC is here.

I can say that here in Holland, its coffee with milk the whole day long. Koffie verkeerd is the Dutch term. But Holland is a very dairy orientated country.

But our Italian customers will only drink cappuccino in the morning, and espressos in the afternoon.

Portugese the other way around, cappuccinos in the afternoon.

Turkish, mostly cafe americanos, no milk, but sugar.

Hope that helps.

There is a book called Coffee Floats, Tea Sinks by Ian Bersten. It is quite a good read about the history of coffee and tea and social aspects are also discussed.
