coffee on Hackney Road, London

This is probably something for all the lost Australians out there, but...

Came across a new small place on Hackney Road (after a nice breakfast at Leila's place on Arnold Circus), we had a long macchiato and a double espresso which were good. I can't remember the name of the coffee they use; I hadn't seen it before.

The food looked nice, and the guy sounded like he was from Sydney but I didn't ask.

It's just before Haggerston Park out on Hackney road.

Jason, does it have a name, or is it just called "coffee"? :-S
We must get our little map project back up and running again!

ha! I'm sure it does have a name, and I'm sure it's not "Coffee on Hackney Road"

Although I was in a rush and I don't want to get it wrong, I'll have a stab and say it's called Bittersweet (or something at least involving that word)... Sorry about the sketchy details, like I said, we were in a little rush and downed the coffee in the rain outside.

yeah, maybe too much coffee....Bitter sweet taste of love sounds about right.

The coffee from you was excellent and they weren't both (cough, or four) for me! And I did have one at Leila's and it was good too (though the eggs were amazing).. Jack might have a weird time going from a Synesso to a 10-year old lever machine, would be really interesting to play around one of those.

Jason & Gwilym, Don't know if you've mentioned it before but are you in the coffee business? Don't be shy to name names! Would be good to hear about the pro side of things down that london.

Hi Guys,

Just thought Id fill in some of the gaps...

We're called Taste of Bitter Love at 276 Hackney Road

We use Danesi Gold as a blend, it's all Arabica, generally from Columbia and Brazil, but I'm with Gwilym, tastes like they sneak some robusta in there.. Regardless it's great..

Thanks for the mention!

Oh yeah, we're from Melbourne!

Hey Billy, thanks for the intro and welcome to the site!
Another antipodean eh! One of these days we really must start a thread on why so many Aussies and Kiwis have opened bars here, and where the coffee culture that you guys have comes from, as you've clearly got a head start on the rest of us!

Just a quick update on this old post about our cafe, for those of you who trek through London for unique coffee experiences. We're no longer using the Danesi at the shop. While we will miss the gutsy dark roasted Roman flavour, there's a good reason..

Square Mile Coffee Roasters started roasting brilliant tasting coffee on our doorstep. So we use them now.

When visiting Squaremile I went there by foot, and after a long day walking your café seemed no less than an oasis to me :)

I'm ashamed to admit I live just minutes from Bitter Sweet, and walk past a lot, but have never been in.

When the 17 hour long days subside, I will make the effort.

Indeed we do Gwilym! It makes a nice transition from the GS3 that James graciously loaned us, following the sudden retirement of the E91.

Hope to see you down there some time Styles, I'm almost always there on a Sunday, but not midweek, yet...
