I've had both one of the best and worst espresso's in my life in Firenze.

I'm sure you probably know to just stay away from the tourist trap areas for both food and coffee, and you will probably be ok.

In fact, in my experience it has been the 'dingy-est' looking place (as long as there are locals in it) the better.

Sorry can't remember the names of specific places, that was before I became a believer (in real coffee).
