I'm off to Bali for some furniture and coffee.....

Postby Joey » Wed Jul 28, 2004 8:28 pm

Hi everyone - and good bye!
I'll miss you the next 10 days.
I'll be on Bali to get some special furniture I need for my shop - which SBs is emptying right now and I'm still fighting for that LM-4group btw...
I was told by my roaster to look out for some good quality coffee from Bali, which should be very good.
(It was usually sold to Japan only and very seldom found here in Europe...)
I will roam the whole Island several times to visit all the factories - I hope I'll see some coffee farms or at least a company who sells the balinesian coffee off the Island....
Got a quick explaination yesterday how the green beans have to look when the quality is ok  I hope I won't come back with a huge coffee bag and my roaster tells me it's total crap
If I'll find something tolerable I can send some to all you (home-)roasters, if you want...
Okey dokey, gotta fill my suitcase now.
Wish me luck that the same furniture I'll pick over there arrives in Vienna one month from now :?

Bye
Joey

I seem to remember people on the SM Homeroast list saying very nice things about Bali SHinzan, that might be the one.

Cheers,

Hugh

Both would be great, I love trying new origins, and Bali would be completley new for me. Just when you think theres nothing new to try :)

Joey, remember that the humidity in Bali is quite a bit higher than in Europe. Untreated wood can easily crack when brought back to Europe.

Have fun!

:P Hi everybody - just a quick message from Bali:
Got almost all my furniture and lots of cheap decoration stuff.
Asked lots of people about coffee - finally got a contact person who brought me samples today.
1 from Bali which looks terribly brownish and smells very earthy...
2 from an Island near Papua New Guinea, called Rentang or something like that.
I brought samples from a very good qualitz Sumatra and a very god PNG, because I thought the Bali coffee should be very similar...as it looks very different I don"t know if it"s a good quality or not :?

Will get more samples tomorrow.
And maybe I have the time to drive up to the mountains where they grow the stuff - but my time here is short and I still have to buy something for the shop, too... I hope to find a good quality soon because o friday the container will be filled and I could send the coffeebag in it... otherwise I can just bring samples...

Whatever, hope you are all well!!! See you soon!
Bye
Joey

I"ll try to check the forum again tomorrow, maybe someone who knows green Bali coffee can confirm to me if it"s ok that the beans are brown-green....
the Rentang ones are almost black-green :o
thanks!!!!

Well I double checked on the Sweet Maria's site just to be sure Joey.

The Bali that everyone raved about was a wet-processed bean, and should have looked good.

Indos in general and Sumatrans in particular are normally dry processed and will have quite a few defects, but this stuff sounds more defect than coffee. I'd stick with samples. My own Sumatrans in the stash are funny looking but nothing like you describe.

Hope you're having a good time btw - all work and no play makes Joey a dull girl! Did you manage to get Mr Joey to come with you?
