Dutch Barista Championship

Postby Raf » Mon Mar 29, 2004 10:42 am

Update: there's a Dutch Barista Championship on April 19th. Anyone going? Michel, this would really be a great time to interview Jeroen the Champ on espresso making etc. Would be a great announcement for the event. And if we can send a reporter, that would be great as well.
This week I am eagerly anticipating the first god shots from my La Spaziale machine....

Neku, I don't think Jeroen is going... He doesn't work as a barista anymore, but as some sort of supplier and trainer to cafe's... Furthermore I discovered that he was the champion 2 years ago, while last year someone else won...

Nevertheless it's nice to visit the championship and talk to people about coffee... Do you happen to know where the championship will take place..?

But Jeroen is in the jury! I don't know where it's going to be, but there's a website: http://www.peeze.nl/barista/

You think you can make it?

I'm sorry, he's not in the jury, he's competing, it seems, and he did win last year, according to the website. The championship is in Rhenen (never heard of it). What do you think, Michel?

Strange... According to this site:

http://www.frieschevlag.nl/latteart/

Michel Buis won in 2003, again an employee from Grand Café Van Bleiswijk... which I find think is strange and a bit suspected

Anyhow, there seems to be two different championships... The barista championship is won by Jeroen, while the latte-art championship is won by Michel Buis.

(Rhenen is nearby Wageningen... which is quite a drive from Hoorn...)

Seems logical: an espresso contest and a latte art contest, nothing suspect about it ;). Too bad you're not going (or are you? and could you nevertheless do a short interview with Jeroen Veldkamp?).

Your correct. As far as I can see now I won't be able to go... but who knows, maybe the winds will change...

And ofcourse I will ask Jeroen next time I see him to pay a visit to TMC and ask him if he wants to do an interview or even better: Join...

I'm going to try and get the day off to go. I was going to post here asking if anyone else was going, but you beat me to it.

Neku, what about you?

I don't think I'll be there. I'll check, but my schedule for the next month or so is hectic.

Ok so it's today, I could not get the time off. What makes it even more annoying is that the urgent job only took me 4 hours :-( instead of the planned 8.....

I wonder who is winning.

What a strange day to have a barista competition? I mean: I understand that most cafés are closed on Mondays, but you won't get a lot of tourists and curious people to visit a competition on a rainy Monday, will you?

Donar Theunissen won the Dutch Barista Championship... Jeroen was second... Third became: Louis Claus from 'De Blonde Pater' in Nijmegen.

Anyway: Donar is representing The Netherlands at the 'World Barista Championship in Triest'. This championship takes place from 18 till 20 june...
Anybody going... or able to visit Triest in June..?

I know I'm not... Unfortunately :?

Too bad: I'll probably be in Trieste this summer, but not in June.
