Yeah, it was the same coffee but different roast. The roast for the espresso does bring out more treacle and less blackcurrant, we are doing it as filter too cos it is lovely like that too.

ah, and yes, it was lovely like that.

by the by.. I made myself a press (not something terribly common for me) of some mega old Mount Kenya from 49th. And I gots to say, it was still pretty damn fine. Roasted on the 4th of Feb, and it was still clean, distinctly good Kenyan, if not a little flat with a hint of oilness. I used 60gms per litre, and i liked that strength (with 4 minutes).

but, my second top up was distinctly worse than my first cup. It could have been a different coffee. Do you crazy press drinkers decant the presspot into another vessel to avoid this extra steepage, or am I just doing it wrong?

EDIT: sorry i just realised I hijacked this thread! SPLIT!

You've got to decant. Recently I've been enjoying decanting through my hario cloth brewer just to clean the cup up a bit without any additional bad paper taste.

Some coffees seem a bit more fragile than others - I think sweeter, rounder coffees don't suffer as badly as crisper, fruitier coffees from an accidental extra minute or few in the pot. I am guessing the Kenyan probably went to the bad kind of grapefruit bitterness?

'baked orange pith", was how angela described it.

i did enjoy the texture of the press more than i used to. I used to run it though paper to clean it up as well, but it took ages.

If it takes ages to run through then you probably have a fines issue with the grinder burrs.

I really enjoy the break and clean style presses, it feels hard to mess up - which is rare for most coffee brewing methods! (Paper filter still stresses me out, even when I am not being pwned on coffeed for my techniques!)

The label finally arrives on Friday - a delay with the printers. Most frustrating. Still very tasty though!

I don't care if it comes with freezer-pen scribble - it's not like I'm going to give mine away as some boutique present.

Hi guys,

Carl, you can always pack it full of cheap Tesco beans and give it to someone as a posh present:D and you'll never have to buy gifts again, simply reuse those fancy labelled packs!

Anyone had luck brewing this blend at doses of around 15-16g? I can't get anything nice out of it unfortunately:|

dsc.

What brew temp/time/volume are you using? I will try and replicate tomorrow and see if I can help.

Hi James,

I tried hitting it at 93, 94 and 95*C (8.5bar, doses varied between 14-17g), anything lower is too lemon-like, but higher temps also bring out too much bitterness. I had one passable espresso from it and that's pretty much it as I only have around 50g left:|

Hi James,

around 40-50ml, but I have to say it blonds quite fast.
