Decaf + normal blend?

Postby atlantis » Tue Aug 19, 2008 5:20 pm

Since I started making espressos - well cappuccinos really in my case - my coffee intake has pretty much trippled. I enjoy the coffees a lot more than whatever I managed to get from a french pot or the aeropress or from filter.

So I was thinking that maybe I should get some decf beans and some normal ones and mix them so a double espresso would really just contain the amount of caffeine of a single one.

Would it work? any pointers at what kind of beans might work together? Thanks!

Decaf beans tend to extract differently to regular beans and usually require quite different grind settings. You may struggle to get a decent shot when mixing the two, but give it a go. Good decaf is available from the usual suspects.

Maybe just drink regular during the day and decaf for the last one or two in the evening. Good quality decaf can work pretty well on its own, especially with milk.

After a couple of 250g tasters, I've just ordered a couple of kilos of Hasbean's Sumatran and Guatemalan decafs :)

WELL worth it! Both absolutely fantastic espressos :)
