A new roaster on the block...and I`m impressed.

Postby Danski » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:30 am

Hiya,

I`m aware of the non commercial rules, so I want to just say that I`m not connected in anyway with this roaster (well except from buying off him), and I`m not getting any kickbacks either.

I`m also new to the site and have spent a few days reading posts - seems that you lot are very knowledgeable, and I felt a bit out of my depth at some points, but I know what I like, so I hope you`ll indulge me.

I came accross this company by simply Googling for a new grinder, and ordered some beans off them at the same time. Anyway, long story a bit shorter, sent me a pack of Universal beans as the master roaster was on a buying trip, promised to send the No.15 that I ordered when he returned, I received them 2 days after they were roasted ! They stamp the roast date on the valved bags they send the beans in.

Both blends were very good - well I like them, and the No.15 is just as described, gets a bit lost in a latte cos I found it very smooth.

One thing that struck me most though was that, to say this is a new business (but seems to know what he`s doing) he told me in an email about some Brazilian beans he`s been working with, and that he recently threw away 140 kgs because he didnt like they way they roasted - I`ve been in business, and I`d expect anyone else to just mix a few hand fulls in with other beans so that no one noticed (maybe I`m a bit cynical though). I feel that should be commended in itself ! I`ve had a really good buying experiance off someone that seems to be passionate about providing a good product, so wanted to share.

Anyway, this is his website - he pointed me toward TMC by the way, and wasnt asking for a recommendation.

If you try them , or have tried them, I`d be interested to hear your opinions.

Thanks for indulging me....

Having this and your post on CG I was curious so I've ordered some of the espresso to try. Always curious to try new things...

Which one did you order?

I`d be really interested to hear what you think, you guys seem to know a lot about espresso, and I`m eager to learn off y`all.

Nice one Danski :) I would've liked to try the No.15, Brazilian Rainha, and Ethiopian Sidamo :) ...and out of curiousity, the Colombian La Manuela for comparison to HB's :) Oh well, next time I'm in London I suppose  :(

Heheh... seizing up the competition, James? ;) :P

*edit* forgot to mention that it was nice of him to refer you to TMC... is he (Reiss Gunson?) also a TMCer? Oh and I like the name Londinium :)

I just like to taste as much as possible. I don't want to be the chef that never goes out to eat anywhere else.

:P James, of course :) It is important to try new things and expand one's 'palate experience' :) Just as it is important to be aware of what your 'peers' are doing ;) To me, it's just good business too. Sometimes it's reassuring and sometimes it keeps you on your toes... either way, you always learn something new :)

So, when, when, when? ;) How much longer will your fans have to wait?

Dan,
To the best of our knowledge, he's not a member here (unless he didn't make this clear on joining). Nonetheless, we are thankful for the recommendations we get, as it means people value the site.

We are also grateful for any new recommendations on where to get beans. Given the wide variety of tastes here, I think there's nothing to be ashamed of. If people have tried something, and enjoyed it, then by all means tell the rest of us.

The only things we try to avoid are people advertising their own wares, or any overly negative/critical posts (which benefit no one). Positive recommendations are to be encouraged!

I too will order some beans when I get the chance. Does anybody know whether there are any retail outlets, or is it mail only?

Yay :D Must be exciting to get so close to finally opening after all the prep and hard work :) Since you're not 'allowed' to advertise your opening, how are we supposed to get advanced notice on TMC? ;) Is your blog the only way to go? And can you put on a web cam and stream opening day/night? :D No added pressure, of course :P

Yes the guy is called Reiss, I`m not too sure if he is a member - though he definately reads, I think he may have been under the impression that he`s not allowed to join as he has his own business - though I guess as long as he doesnt try to push it, he would be OK.

As far as I know, he is mail order only at the moment, but his address is on his website.

I was a bit worried that I was goingt o get flamed for posting a recommendation when I`m so new - thanks for not ripping into me. Do let me know what you think when you`ve tried his beans, though, so that I can compare against what I think.

Cheers

Aadje has got big ears and he smells funny :P

Sorry, don't know what came over me :D

As for Jim, well the site team are really rather hoping that he'll invite us all to an opening party so that we can tell the rest of you about it  But other than that, he can do the same as everyone else. Just send one of the team a message and we'll pass on the info.

What'd Caked do to deserve a hailing?
Three Francesconi (CMA) espresso machines - Rossi, San Marco, LaCimbali, Faema and 2 Mazzer Major grinders- CoffeeTech Maggionlino, Hottop, Alpenröst and HW Precision roasters.
I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!
