Harrar is great....producing nice dripped and potentially great espresso.
However, Panama is ranked higher by me because it's more complex.

I've never had good results with this bean for espresso. What am I doing wrong I wonder? I roast to second crack but it always seems acid somehow.

After Monsooned, I have Haraar amongst my favourites, in fact, Haraar works better for me at ristretto, than MM. Looking thru my logs, I see that I take it 10 secs into rolling 2nd - so expect an oil strike :)

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but Haraar grinds have a distinct, unique smell. Worth having a sniff, prior to brewing.

Blueberries! :D well, when I get the roast right ;) Sometimes I think it smells like really ripe fruit that's gonna go bad in two days. My best is still my first roast of it. I think I stopped it just before rolling really started, uhm, rolling  I've had great espresso from Harrar from 10 secs into 2C right up to rolling 2C. I may have gone quite a bit past rolling 2C before but found it too roasty for me.

I have had problems with getting great tasting harrar espresso too. So far, I have viewed it as a lesser ethiopian than yirgacheffe - less refined, less balanced, less varietals but more acid and strength. But the last batch I tried was really good, not at all like the previous Harrars!
Perhaps the other ones were all of inferior quality, I don't know. This one was great.

It has been a long time since I've had stellar Harrar, and I now wonder whether I'd see that classic blueberry as good or as too far into the funk.

Will start chasing down some samples!

Well... I may just have been lucky this once. We'll see next time I get one, not sure were this one came from. Interesting that you have had the same experience, k7.

After grinding but before pulling the shot - have a sniff of the grinds and tell us what they smell like. I find the smell quite distinctive and not very pleasant. Fortunately, this doesn't come thru in the cup (for me).
