Everything tastes like Aldi coffee if it's boiled long enough

Sorry to intevene here. No! I don't know how, but somehow the Aldi brothers manage to make coffee that just tastes the same. Brewed in a cheap filter machine, brewed with boiling water, even after hours in the thermos flask, and even after half an hour on the heating plate. I really don't know how they do it, but it's reproducible.

Oh yes and it tastes consistently bad for me :)

This week I like my coffee luke-warm.

Now that's consistency for you 8)

(though I'm puzzled as to why as learned a gentleman as you would go to the trouble of trying Aldi coffee in so many different ways? I've heard of coffee porn , but coffee S&M.... now now :P )

ok I appreciate what you're saying espressomatic, but why post such a poisonous review.

If you really don't like a coffee... say it... don't accuse the roast, don't accuse the freshness of the beans. These are both highly damaging statements for a roaster. I have a good friend and flatmate who tends towards the 'its crap' instead of the 'I don't like it' And its an ignorant, arrogant, and damaging view!!

I could say some horrible stuff about the celebes tojaso or however you spell it.. but I wouldn't blame the roast or the freshness, just my inability to make it not taste like mud!

Well said Chris.
I could say some horrible stuff about OBJ, but I wouldn't blame the roast or the freshness, just the poor people that like to drink it :D

I find this disturbing... especially now that the comments seem more generalised. What is wrong with saying that something IS crap if it seems like crap to the consumer - not just "I don't like it". Why is it okay to say the review is crap(py) rather than just "you don't like the review" for xxx reason? I know that if I've done a crap job or served a less-than-expected quality dish/beverage, I'd want to know what was wrong. If a person sugar-coats it with "just don't like it", how am I ever expected to learn or correct it?

If xxx bean leaves a roasty after-finish and might have benefitted from a lighter roast, why should anyone not be able to say so? If the product received is stale, why must anyone refrain from saying so?

As I mentioned before, none of us knows the facts of the experience of that reviewer. I admit I find it extremely difficult to believe that it was even half as bad as the reviewer claims... but that's because of my own personal experiences with the HasBean team. My initial thought when I read it was that the reviewer might have had competing interests. Who knows? Maybe the package of beans, in the midst of delivery, became tainted with exhaust fumes or whatever?

Personally, I'd let the retailer know and trust them to rectify the situation at the very least... and even if/when rectified, I don't see why I wouldn't be able to post my initial experience but also add if the supplier/retailer fixed it, did so in a timely manner, and/or went above & beyond. In my personal experiences with HasBean, regardless of whether a mistake had been made or not, customer service is always above & beyond.

At the end of the day 'benefit of the doubt' works both ways. Sometimes people just don't consider things they say and/or do and the impact of those words/actions. I quite often forget to do that myself

ha haa I think we are all guilty of making statements or comments which we regret, or haven't thought about the impact. However, it doesnt make it right, and it certainly should not be condoned.

Maybe the coffee did arrive in a bad state, but as we all know, hasbean would have sorted out the problem if there was one, there however is no excuse for the stuff that reuben wrote.

And in response to someone earlier pointing out he might want to learn more, and may be reading what we're saying, It's not the kind of attitude I really want to be hearing in the coffee industry, to be honest, I get enough poison from consumers, let alone my peers!

I think the reason behind the contempt for the reviewer in this thread is because we all know and have experienced the level of quality and exceptional service HasBean has consistently provided, time and time again. I am ferociously loyal to HB because of that... but I'm also confident that that review is so far off from the majority of reviews and experiences that most readers will know better.. and possibly also wondered if the reviewer had competing interests.

The regretful thing about this is giving that particular review even more exposure than it deserves :(

Taste is a funny thing, there are score of single origins and blends available, which suggests that each has it's own keen devotees. I don't like Kona but I do like dark, oily Monsooned. :) There are millions out there that love their Kona and dislike the MM.

Some Roasters play safe and just offer a couple of SO's and blends. What I love about companies like Hasbean and Anothercoffee, is the fact that they offer loadsa choice - although it may take several years to work your way through them.
