But where should I start?

Suggestions please for a selection of beans to introduce me to the world of SO! What I am looking for is an absolute typical taste of each area to give me a good starting point!

Fire away ;)

Monsoon Malabar
Guatamalan Rios Organic
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

Maybe a Cachioera or Terazina as well.

4 very differing examples for the palate would be my offering Mr Rob :D

Cheers, just ordered some Monsoon Malabar to start me off, I shall work through that list (at a somewhat slower rate than the last 2 days of drinking coffee - I am sure 250g should last more than an afternoon and the following day until 4pm!!!)

lol, the day i got my espresso machine i started testing it, god knows how much i had, decided i'd had too much, sat down in my room and immediately got a nosebleed... hmm.... not good for you.
My advice would be to read the post around here on some nice yemen and try that... don't know if hasbean has in stock at mo.
I think it was steve posted recently on the problems of "typical" coffees from each area, but yirg is definitely a must. maybe try some old brown java for another interesting one... I think the best way to get going is to try and find the extremes, the most obvious and pronounced tastes and then work in toward some more complex ones.
Everyone is welcome to tell me to shut up if i'm talking rubbish as usual...
Bezzera BB105, Hario slim grinder, Hario filter, swissgold filter, aeropress, cafetieres, cold brewer, stovetops, lots of teas...

...and lots of love

Yep, monsooned is top of my list of favs. Try higher and lower temperatures, it's amasing what different notes you get.
