A Newbie here

Postby keni » Tue May 01, 2007 11:17 am

Hi a newbie to TMC here.
A keen roaster from the deep south.Australia to be precise.
In welcoming me here in the members forum bruceb asked me what beans I've roasted.
I'm a member of "Coffeesnobs" here in OZ and once a month we're able to buy beans cheaply(for here anyway) so I've been able to try a variety.
So far I've roasted these SO beans.

Ethiopian: Yirgacheffe; Gemaoro; Harrar Naturals
Zambia AA
Colombian Popoman
Sumatran Mandheling
Kenya AA
Brazilian
PNG Kimel
Costa Rica Tarazu

We even had a couple of pre mixed blends:
Altitude Premium Blend
Africa Red Sea Blend.

I've been lucky so far and haven't killed any and have just started to try blending.
I'd appreciate any comments, help, recommendations on blending and other SO beans to try.
I'll be lurking here and any other online sources in my quest for coffee perfection.

Cheers,
Ken.

From what you've got above try blending roughly equal portions of the Zambian, Brazilian and Yirg, and roast the whole lot to the first few pops of second crack.
I wish I were what I was when I wished I were what I am.

Hi Ken

I would add monsooned malabar and Ethiopian Sidamo for a bit of depth and maybe to counter the brightness in other varietals. I would try and get these 2 beans to at least FC+ with a bit of oil showing on day 3.
I wouldn't put more than 20% of the sidamo into a blend, as it can be (for my taste buds) a bit overpowering.

Hi Joris,
Thanks for the welcome.

Cumberpach,
Thanks for the suggestions,I'll hunt down some of those and experiment.

Tisri,
That blend does work very well. Thanks for the tips.
I am drinking my way through it slowly.
I did 4 roasts with all beans together and various settings of the calibration resistor.
I also roasted each bean separately and am about to try blending them now to compare to the pre roast blends.

Cheers,
Ken.

Three Francesconi (CMA) espresso machines - Rossi, San Marco, LaCimbali, Faema and 2 Mazzer Major grinders- CoffeeTech Maggionlino, Hottop, Alpenröst and HW Precision roasters.
I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!
