weighing coffee - how much to use

Postby jon » Fri Mar 02, 2007 6:13 pm

I've previously used a spoon for measuring, but have just picked up some digital scales. About how much coffee do I weigh for 3/9 cup french press and single/double espresso?

For the french press, start with 55g ground coffee per litre water. Espresso - depends on what filter you have. For the double filter, try 14, 16, 18 gram, and adjust the grind appropriatly (very fine for 14 gram, quite a bit coarser for 18 gram) and see what you like :). With my filter, I have ca. 18 gram in it when I use my finger to stripe it off, and I love shots with 15 or 16 gram.

Oh yes, I recently got a digital scale too, that's how I know this ;)

This week I like my coffee luke-warm.

Thanks. Hm, the scale measures in grams, but not sure how accurate it is. One way to find out, I guess :D

To get 2mm clearance from the showerscreen, I would weigh 16gr into a double basket. However Monsooned Malabar is less dense, so I aim for 15gr. As Lukas states, a lot depends on the fineness of grind.Tamping weight will play a part also.
