Storing green beans

Postby GS1150bike » Wed May 31, 2006 7:55 pm

Hi
Does anyone know what is the best way of storing green beans. I read somewhere today that you should not store them in plastic bags because they sweat.
I've done a search on the net and ebay for hessian, jute and cotton sacks and bags but haven't found antything suitable for a kilo or two of beans.

The foil bags should be a good way of keeping them. Away from strong smells and direct sunlight and away from heat.

Hi Steve. Mine are currently still in the foil bags that HasBean ship them in. George for example had some hessian sacks cut down and made into smaller bags for his greens. Cotton bags are another option.

I can recommend the Vacuvin system http://tinyurl.com/o9p9b I would go for the set of 3 if you want to store up to 2Kg.
You may get some sweating if you pump more than say, 12 times with roasted beans, but will not affect greens. 6 pumps should be fine.

I guess a clean cotton or linen pillow-case would do at a pinch

I tried that, woke up with funny little indentations in my ears.
