Interesting article on the coffee world in Eritrea

Postby jameso » Fri Apr 14, 2006 1:33 pm

Found it on the Reuters site here

Raises a number of interesting issues that we've discussed here at various times.

Does roasting over wood taste any different?
Is a "fair" price one that is pricey enough to reward someone or cheap enough to afford?

Just in case anyone else finds it a good read...

Zaffiro (sold) - Cona - AeroPress
Rocky - IRoast (I ruined it) - Hottop
Now mainly use French Press

Thanks James. Very interesting, and well written too for a news article - the descriptions of life passing by were excellent. That does seem a lot of money for people on such small incomes to pay for coffee. One wonders about the standard of the beans too, and then there is the distinct lack of choice, which would normally be expected by consumers elsewhere at those sorts of prices (when considered in proportion to income locally).

Excellent article on life in a poor coffee loving nation
Bezzera B3000A, Giotto Premium, several Cona's, several Balance Brewers, Atomic, Milano etc,
Aristarco, Rancilio MD 40, Ditting and Eureka MCI grinders, several antique roasters, a mini500/800N propane/electric Taiwanese roaster, greens all over the place...and some other unmentionables that have not been mentioned......

Interestingly this isn't anything new. Producing countries often cant afford to drink there own products, particularly the good stuff. I've yet to taste a good cup of coffee out side of the cupping room at origin.

The tragedy of Steve's experience being that even those who can afford or find coffee are drinking poor quality at relatively (for them) high prices, let alone having no choice of origin. The world is all wrong :(
