Thanks George. I will start using 110 grams as per your advice. Where might one find one of these motor mechanic thingies? I to am a little hard of hearing - especially with background noise - so those little dancing beans pinging on the container make it hard for me to hear the cracks too

Cakey: here is the stethy thingy I mentioned. Originally it had a steel rod which I suppose mechanics use against the engine block. I changed this for a telescopic extension from a magnet and the size is ideal for the job and I position it just over the beans.

After some messing about, I am currently using 120g which with the Manuela seems to equate to just under nine and a half minutes when balancing quantity for an even roast against depth of roast. No doubt it will change again - expecially as the roasts have taken place in different parts of the kitchen and that must be effecting the ambient temperature - another variable to remove
