Wooo. she gets a bit hot....need to clean that shower screen

On a serious note, that looks to be around 4 oz+ cooling flush?

Hi Dave,
Depends on what you mean by hot  she get's about as hot as any other E61 i've used, seriously, that was actually after a longer idle time than 4 minutes more like 20! I forgot how long ago it was i'd made that shot! Trust me, the shower screen is absolutely immaculate, my cleaning rituale is quite scary, It's just some wierd shadow from my shitty camera that makes it look a little dark at the edges!

Cooling flush is probably around 4-5Oz depending of course on the idle time.

Back to the original thread :)

In the interest of science I purchased some of the Sainsburys espresso blend today.
My first impression on opening the packet was the fishy smell, quite often I smell this with a dark roast, also a slightly stale smell, but not as bad as I expected. Second was that the beans were quite oily, and not what I would call a Northern Italian style roast. It was not a really dark roast but quite dark.
I set the Mazzer rather finer than my current home blend required as the roast was quite dark, and (by luck) got a 28s slightly short double. The colour of the pour was quite nice, if a little thin. The crema in the cup was a nice colour with a little flecking, but not very deep.
As a control in the test, I got my fiance to try it without telling her it was not a home-roast. I could tell by her face that she wasn't over impresed, she said it tased rather thin with little body, and a bit "toppy" i.e. no bass notes in the coffee. I then tried it myself. Yes it was a little thin, and a touch bitter, but better than I expected. There was not much sweetness, and the syruppy texture from a really fresh roast was not there.

This is very far from a home roast, or a fresh roast from a pro, but way better than pre-ground Illy from a can or Lavazza beans I tried in the past.

It is usefull to try things like these from time to time to get a reference point. What it does prove is that we are not just banging on about freshness and quality, you really can taste the difference. What it also shows is what a good grinder and espresso machine can pull from even mediocre beans.

Davec
....probably be as worthless as the Tinned Gaggia beans I had such high hopes for
And as for milk.....don't get me started on milk....I've tried to Microfoam just about everything from all the supermarkets; skimmed, semi skimmed, full fat, UHT

The worst coffee I ever tasted was Gaggia pre-ground, in a 'House of Frasier' store that were demo-ing Gaggia Classics.
I don't foam much (milk that is) but I found that the filtered Cravendale (Tesco) was pretty good in Winter. I think the everyday supermarket OB stuff, will be ok, once the mo-moos are off the Winter fodder.
I'm still not certain why you are spending good money on s/market beans. I suspect you are writing a weighty tome, for one of the w/end suppliments - spill the beenz!!

But me, i'll try any bean once and think I almost have....can't quite bring myslef to pay £4.99 for a tin of the Illy beans though

Eek! If that's the 250g tin, that equates to £40 for 2kilos. You can get 2kilos of greens for £13, from well known, world famous roasters, or as a last resort ..... Hasbean. You need and I need you to upgrade to a HotTop - it would have paid for itself by now. I need you to try some of my favs, in YOUR HotTop, before I decide on the HT or the Gene Cafe' - so there!!
Some years ago, I used to import coffee directly from Jamaica, Mavis Bank (Jablum), Jamaica Blue Mountain

I've read some reports of tourists, who were treated to some Blue Mountain, roasted by the local Rastas in a frying pan over an open fire. They said the experience was 'mind blowing', altough there's no guarantee, that the ingrediants were 100% coffee bean .......

I think you can lose around 20% in the roast....so for a 2kg bag, you could lose around 200g

I've only tested the weight loss on 3 SO's :-
Monsooned at 16.5%
E.Djimmah at 17.1%
E.Yirg at 17.5%
Still represents a big % saving over supermarket brands and a 1000% uplift in taste. My problemo, is the only local s/market is Morrisons, not reknown for it's signature beverages, although they do sell Dowe Egberts. I know it's pre-ground and vac packed, I've never tried it, but it should remain drinkable for a day.

The quality of Douwe Egberts is overrated in my opinion.

Dave, for some Kona beans direct from the farm I can recommend these two.
When ordering request an Global Priority Express Mail envelope for the beans to be shipped in.
Suzanne at: http://www.coffeeofkona.com/ or
Cea at : http://www.smithfarms.com/order.asp

You will be supporting small coffee growers too and the beans are very good.

Shipping will be about $10 or slightly less for the Global Priority Express Mail envelope of 2 or 3 pounds.
I always buy them green and roast my own from them but if I where you I would try both the medium and dark roast from Lions Gate.
Good seperately and/or mixed together or if just buying one kind then the medium roast.
I think Smiths just offer one roast.

If buying roasted then possibly only two pounds will fit the envelope.

Good luck and furthermore, they are nice people and aim to please their customers.
