Another bean supplier

Months ago, I spotted a guy called Peter James of James Gourmet Coffee posting in the SCAE forums (he wanted a recommendation for a new roaster).

Being a cheeky soul, I emailed him and asked whether he would sell greens. He mailed me back promptly and indicated that he was still getting his act together but that when he'd got himself sorted out he'd mail me with some prices.

I'd all but forgotten about him when out of the blue last week an email arrived from him.

Long story short, I've been chatting away with him and he seems a really good bloke (that's two out of three roasters I've talked to who are really good blokes, the other one being of course our own Eeffoc :D ). I've had a look at his web site and while it's not the best site in the world he does have some very interesting stuff on there. Some of it overlaps our good friend Eeffoc, some of it is different. All of it is interesting.

Buying greens is not possible from the site at the moment, but he's selling me stuff at UKP 8.00 per kilo (plus a fixed price of UKP 3 p&p for any weight). That's quite competitive on the greens pricing, and the postage has got to be a loss maker!

I've got a kg each of Mexican Tapachula Liquid Amber, Cuban Turquino and Ethiopian Harrar coming for a trial. I was running out of Harrar anyway (and it'll be interesting to contrast it with Hill & Valley's - I prefer not to buy there any more), and the other two should be very interesting.

His site must be under construction again as I can't get in... I was in though and I like his descriptions of the coffees... (although I disagree with him on the Cuban coffee...)
Strange site-construction btw: (when you go to beans in the menu, and after that press something else in the menu, it just disappears... I've made the whole menu disappear at the end.

All that JS and now-it's-hidden-now-it's-not table stuff - weird - I don't think it works that well.

In what way do you disagree about the Cuban Michel?

Cuban (at least my Cuban...) is a coffee quite different than everthing else I have tasted in 'bean-land'. Especially when roasted just till the end of first crack, a chocolaty coffee (not really suitable for espresso though) is born which is more than a coffee 'to taste just for interest sake', but is tasted time after time for it's complex, smooth chocolat...

OK then Michel, you've just talked yourself into doing a cupping review.

Download the form from the "Downloads" section, fill it in and email it to me.

Gotcha!

Shipping! Shipping! Why the BLEEP does shipping have to cost so much to Portugal?! This is really getting me down, folks. I can't find any green suppliers locally, so I've looked at a few in the UK and one in NL. While the bean prices are good, the shipping is just aweful. *shakes head*

Oh, I know...I wasn't trying to hint at anything. Just complaining about the sad state of the coffee industry in my part of the world. :/

Site seems to be working now. It is also possible to buy all of his beans as greens from the site now.

The site looks very good now, and the flat rate postage is excellent for larger orders.

Of course, being just 5 minutes drive from Has Bean I rarely go anywhere else nowadays.
