Easiest roasting bean yet

Postby simonp » Tue Nov 29, 2005 11:34 am

I found the easiest roasting bean yet last night. It is Ugandan Bugisu (2005 crop) from Sweet Marias. I did this in the Hottop, and first crack was early (for my machine anyway) at a little after 16 minutes. The snaps were very loud and distinct. This continued for about 1 minutes 40 seconds, and then there was a clear gap of over a minutes until 2nd started. 2nd can sometimes be quite quiet, but this was the loudest I have heard, but still very different from 1st, so unmistakable. I ran about 30 seconds into 2nd (just gaining pace) as I wanted a darkish roast on this bean as it will take it and gives more choclate notes in espresso this way. This gave a shiny surface, but no visible oils.

Definitely an easy bean to roast, and would be a good starter. Not that readiliy available though :(
