Agtron/Neotec Light Spectrometers

Postby Jem_Bean » Tue Nov 09, 2010 10:40 am

Morning All,

I'm sorry to get so technical and geeky on this one, i know that often doesnt sit well at TMC

We currently use a Neotec light spectrometer to read the colour of our roasted coffee. However, it seems the Agtron is more widely used and i've come up against people asking for a specific Agtron-based colour for their blends. Without knowing the equivalent values between the Agtron and the Neotec this is more than a little difficult.

so, the question i pose is 'Does anyone know what the equivalent values are between the two?'

If anyone can refer me to something to make sense of this i'd be indebted to them...

Thanks all,

J

PM sent with attached .pdf file. Hope that is what you need.
Three Francesconi (CMA) espresso machines - Rossi, San Marco, LaCimbali, Faema and 2 Mazzer Major grinders- CoffeeTech Maggionlino, Hottop, Alpenröst and HW Precision roasters.
I decided I needed a bit of a change so I roasted some Monsooned Malabar. That was a change!

Amazing - never heard of this before. Is this standard practice with all roasters, to gauge roast level with a spectrometer?

It is a bit of kit I'd like to own one day. There are some interesting new models displaying a colour distribution curve too which would be interesting.

I'll never own too many items with which to enjoy coffee.

It's something we use to make sure every roast comes out as similarly as possible. Jim, you'll know it's almost impossible to get the beans to exactly the same colour every time but I'd definitely recommend you get one to keep consistency as high as possible

Not sure if this is the same data source as you've had PM'd but here's a converstion table.

I have some data kicking about somewhere (not from Probat) showing that the Probat Colourette gives a more statistically reliable performance vs the other three. I'll post it if I can find it.
