Stealing an Idea from Home Barista: Rate My Roast

Basically the home roasters anonymously submit their roasts via mail to a number of judges. The judges post their comments etc - with an award (eventually) going to the best roasts / blends.

I think it's a great idea, because often feedback from home roasting is very limited. Something similar on this side of the pond would be great, and I know for me would add a lot of impetus to improve my roasts.

What chance it might be a goer?

Sounds like a nice way to get an honest opinion about the quality of the roasts, if you ask friends and family they will usually "be nice" to you when giving their opinion.

Do you need judges? I'd happily pull shots of a coffee and throw my feedback into the mix.

Ideally I think the same people would taste the different offerings. In the interest of consistency if nothing else.

Also I think pulling shots and giving feedback qualifies as judging :D

So Jim, you offering your judgely services?

:P

Perhaps then, and indication of interest from some home roasters, and maybe if another judge / feedback giver were to present themselves, something could be organised.

I'd be all for putting together a blend and looking for honest, even brutal, feedback.

I might even be tempted to get my wok out and have a go! Rough and ready, I think I'll call it ;)

Sounds like an interesting idea. I might be up for submitting one of my roasts to be scrutinised by palates more discerning than my own... I think :P

Sounds like fun and it's always good to get feedback. I'm with Jim in thinking it need not be a competition as such, just useful constructive comments. Maybe some sort of summer jam could be arranged with people bringing along a bag of something or another for all to sample? :D

Ok to get the ball rolling I'll send a bag over to James.
Should I post details of the roast before or after feedback? I'm edging towards after...

If you don't mind the shipping costs of sending it to Norway, I'd be happy to offer the collective feedback of the roasters in our roastery. (The other ones don't know it yet, but it's always good to taste something new!)
