UPS are very good... but horribly expensive.

Why can't the package be sent via the Royal Mail Parcelforce.... 35 quid for up to 2.5 kg. Still sounds expensive to me, but a fraction of the price for UPS et al.

that's interesting Eivind. Can you give us an idea just how much of a difference there is between a >2kg package using the two shipment services?

Sure. These are the numbers I get when placing an order at hasbean. Adding 7 250g bags of Green Rwanda Washed Robusta gives me a package of 1.93 kg, costing £11.20.

Shipping with UK Royal Mail costs £10.98. Shipping the same package with UPS isn't too bad, only £23.90.

Replacing the 7 250g bags with a 2kg bag gives me a price of £11 for the coffee, and the cost for shipping a 2.2 kg parcel using UPS becomes a whopping £40.05! (other shipping options are not available)

I saw the film "Black Gold" recently, and discovered that since the Coffee Growers Agreement ended several years ago, the price growers get has plummeted often to subsistence levels, such as a fraction of a cent per kilo. the anwer? more demand for Fair Trade from us consumers.

This is True Jonny in the commercial sector nut in the specialty sector prices have been rising for years. Fair trade doesn't belong in this sector its way too cheap.

the only sustainable way to improve the lie of producers is by it being a two way street of improving quality and improving prices and this is happening across the board in the specialty market.

Black gold has a very narrow view of coffee take a look at the front page of here to see my other thoughts :) www.toomuchcoffee.com

Are we living in the same (coffee) world?
Please check coffee prices in London and New York and than tell us more about plummeting prices.

I believe he meant that even though also the fair trade prices are rising (as all the future prices seem, too), fair trade's still way too cheap. I tend to agree :)
