Yes It's a nice site for homebuilds. The 1st homebuilt contest was great fun(entered my DreamRoast 1kg.). There is going to be another contest early 2008 but no dates are set yet. Also John and David are doing a design and build of a new roaster using a thread and posts to share ideas, on the site.

You can buy a halogen oven, with a powerfull internal fan, for £50 with adjustable temp control up to 250C. http://www.jmldirect.com/Halogen-Oven-PH1500/
The only problem is - how do you stir the beans?
If you could insert a mult-bladed windmill, attached to a Hottop bean-stirrer ........ job done. I need to reincarnate as a diy handyman.

I am using a large (1kilo) homebuilt roaster for a while now. Very simple design and a bit of ahassle to dump the beans but rather good results never the less. It's definitely not as well designed as some of the ones in the mentioned threat and it's taken me quite a couple of kilos to get the hang of it ;)

And we have a winner ;) Yes, it's a washing machine drum, small toploader.

I have some ideas to change it (to make dumping easier and faster) but also am thinking of a complete different design, hot air with drum instead of convection. But there's always one big problem..... time ....

Oh and Farmroast, I love the looks and design of the dreamroast , must've taken a lot of time and hassle to build it.

Nice machine, cooling by a garden blower?
It is difficult to guestimate BTU for your device, a lot of heat escapes of course.

If you get the coffee ready and nicely brown in 15 minutes, you have found it.

I use a very heavy duty propane burner and the cooling is done outside the drum (after dump).
I can get well into 2nd crack in 15 minutes if I run it on full power.

The picture was from a while back, the frontside can now be opened and closed and the burner is fixed to that "door" so when it's open I can put the dumptray underneath the drum and dump. After dumping I empty the tray into the cooler (a rather large collander with a couple of powerfull fans underneath) which cools the beans. Cooling 1Kg until cool to the touch takes about 1,5 or 2 minutes.

Today I fitted a thermometer on the drum (Found one which was used in an pottery oven, was very easy to mount). Did 2 roasts today of 1,25 kilo per batch and was very please with the accuracy of the thermometer, I checked it against a infrared heatgun aimed at the beans and they were not far off.

Will take some pics next time and post em.

A bit late to the party here, but it's great to see so many new ideas for home built roasters. They look great. How are those pics coming along Joris?

Well, a small update, the roaster in my pic is being disassembled since with the current weather it just can't keep its heat. I'm working on a new roaster now, pics and schematics will follow when finished.
